The passing of Sheikh Saleh Al Shaiba, the 109th Guardian of the Kaaba, marks a deeply significant moment in Islamic history. As the Sadin (custodian) of the Kaaba, Sheikh Saleh dedicated his life to upholding a role that has been passed down through generations of the Bani Shaiba tribe, a lineage that stretches back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him).
On June 22, 2024, Sheikh Saleh was laid to rest at the historic Al Mualla Cemetery in Makkah following the Fajr prayer at Masjid Al Haram. His passing is not only a loss for his family but a moment of reflection for Muslims worldwide, who honor his legacy of service and devotion to the holiest site in Islam.
The custodianship of the Kaaba, or Sadana, is one of the oldest and most respected traditions in Islamic history. This responsibility was first entrusted to the Bani Shaiba tribe by the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) on the day of the conquest of Makkah in 630 CE. Handing over the key to Uthman ibn Talha, the Prophet declared: "Take it, O Bani Talha, forever and always, and it shall not be taken from you except by an oppressor." As the 109th successor of this trust, Sheikh Saleh Al Shaiba oversaw a range of responsibilities, including opening and closing the Kaaba, overseeing its cleaning, maintaining the Kiswah, and welcoming visitors.
The Life and Legacy of Sheikh Saleh Al Shaiba
As we reflect on Sheikh Saleh's life, it is important to understand the historical significance of his role." Sheikh Saleh Al Shaiba was not just a guardian of the Kaaba’s keys but a symbol of unwavering commitment to the sanctity of the house of Allah. Born into the Bani Shaiba tribe, a lineage tied to the Quraysh, Sheikh Saleh was the 77th keeper since the conquest of Makkah and the 109th since the time of Qusai bin Kilab, an ancestor of the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). His legacy includes a life of service, humility, and devotion. He ensured that the Kaaba remains a place of peace and sanctity for the millions of Muslims. His passing underscores the significance of this sacred responsibility and the values it represents: faith, unity, and dedication to Allah.
The custodianship of the Kaaba remains within the Bani Shaiba family, ensuring the continuity of this sacred tradition. The role of Sadin is not always passed to the direct son but to a capable family member, chosen based on their ability to fulfill the responsibilities. Sheikh Abdul Malik Al-Shaibi, the Deputy Chief Keeper, is expected to succeed Sheikh Saleh and continue this unparalleled legacy of service. On June 17, 2024, as part of the annual tradition, Sheikh Abdul Malik received the new Kiswah (the Kaaba’s ceremonial covering) from HRH Prince Saud bin Mishaal bin Abdulaziz, symbolizing the family’s enduring role in preserving the sanctity of the Kaaba.
Sheikh Saleh Al Shaiba’s passing is a moment of reflection and gratitude for the guardianship of the Kaaba, a legacy that has remained unbroken for over 1,400 years. As we honour his memory, it is also a reminder of the deep spiritual connection that binds all Muslims to the Kaaba, the qibla of our prayers.
